The Urnes stave church sits nestled in one of Norway’s most spectacular valleys. Before the 19th century there were over 1000 stave churches in Norway. Today there are only 25. 24 in Norway, and one, in Poland. (Vang Stave Church – Wikipedia)
The church has a distinctive if understated appearance, with the pointed spire of the bell tower, steeply sloping tar-covered wooden roof and distinctive undulating walls made of staves – upright planks. The southern wall painted a bright yellow, catches summer sun, but hiding in the north is the doorway this church is perhaps most famous for.
These carvings are not the only artworks to be discovered in this church, use the hotspots, or this matterport tour to find out more.
