Sword with a decorated hilt
Chronology:
Early Middle Ages, second half of 10th c. – early 11th c. AD
Location:
Dołhobyczów, Lubelskie, Poland; accidental find
Rev. Stanisław Staszic Museum in Hrubieszów
The sword was forged of iron. Its grip is decorated with silver wire. Traces of silver plating can also be seen on the cross-guard and pommel. The blade was made of several bars: an iron shaft and four steel layers covering the iron part. That made the blade flexible and resistant to fracturing. Such swords were owned by the nobility of the time, mostly members of the princely retinue. The accidental nature of the find creates a challenge of identifying the owner. Perhaps, its history can be linked to military campaigns waged by the rulers of Poland and Ruthenia in the so-called Cherven Cities. Similar weapons have been discovered in Scandinavia.
