This spindle whorl is a stone weight (of Ovruch schist) that was attached to a spindle when hand-making linen and wool yarn. It has a biconical shape and is similar form-wise to hundreds of similar items known from Ruthenia and eastern Poland. A unique thing about this object is that it has a male name engraved on it the Cyrillic alphabet: Хотѣнъ/hotěn (Хотен/hoten – which stands for lover/enthusiast, volunteer, master). In Ruthenia, not only monks but also craftsmen and merchants possessed the skill of writing. The item has undergone geological analyses; therefore, its current shape slightly differs from the original.
