The encolpion is made up of two parts, originally linked by a hinge. The item is ranked among to the so-called Kyiv encolpions. They stand out among other similar artefacts as their arms widen towards the end to take the shape of medallions. The central section is occupied by the figure of a saint. The rich ornamentation was made using the niello technique. The hollow spaces in the drawing carved in the metal plane are filled with a fusible powdered (black) mixture of metals. Inside the item, there was enough room to hold a relic. Reliquaries of this kind were worn around the neck.
