Fibula is a type of brooch in the shape of a safety pin that fastens pieces of garment. This one has the bow in the form of a swimming duck. It was cast in bronze. Similar items were discovered, for example, in western Ukraine and south-western Belarus. Zoomorphic fibulae are rare finds across the European Barbaricum. However, they are quite popular in the Roman provinces, mainly in Pannonia. The duck-shaped fibulae from Masłomęcz are probably local imitations of Roman designs. Perhaps they were adopted by the Goths through the Sarmatians. The image of this unique artefact has been embedded, but not only, in the official emblem of Hrubieszów Municipality.
